Yeah, it's fine for most pokemon to be able to grow in both physical and special attacks, but some pokemon one is so much higher maxed than the other. For example, Alakazam and Machamp: It would be totally ridiculous to train physical attack for the former, but the latter it would be useless to train them in special attack. Not to mention some pokemon don't even learn special moves while some don't learn physical except maybe through TM's... and I would never teach for example, Machamp a special move like Round or Focus Blast through TM/TR.
