Hello there! I'm getting around to writing all my feedback/thoughts on the jam projects so here's what I thought of Pokémon Ranger Star.
This game was obviously a really enjoyable experience with a very unique battle system when it comes to Fan-Games which made it very dynamic to play through and made it stand out through all of the Fan-Game experiences I've had in a while.
However, by creating a new gameplay system of your own it makes it more susceptible to issues compared to just using the well-oiled machine of the turn based combat system. Mainly with some of the errors that people have unfortunately ran across, but mainly with some of the smaller things like the HP Bar feeling so detached from the battles themselves which makes it hard for me to see the HP while battling, making me just hope that I'm not close to dying at any given moment. I really think putting the HP Bar over the player's Pokémon instead of the top-left corner would help with that a lot.
I also found it a little hard to understand that I was supposed to use my Pokémon's moves in the overworld to do some of the puzzles, though that could've just been me being dumb.
Another small thing is that for the dummy to really be useful in the player I feel like they should be told about it before getting pushed into your first battle, plus having it in the second HQ would be helpful in case you capture more Pokémon in that time and want to see what their moves do.
The polish and ambience of all the environments were on point though, especially Driplop Wetlands. I think that's one of the things I'm growing to appreciate with your projects over others, is that you understand how to really immerse someone into an environment and really believe in its existence.
The story was also one of your strongest that you've written so far, I think it's a little clunky getting into it, but it really starts getting its stride at Driplop Wetlands and the dialogue had me hooked throughout.
All of this wasn't even mentioning the incredible boss battles, so engaging and such a fun way to round up each of the missions.
Overall, such an astounding game that feels so incredibly polished and executed, it's also great to see you make a game not in Gen 2! :D It also made you able to put in Overworld Shadows, eheh. If you ever choose to continue working on this game and release it I'll definitely be playing it Day 1!
